Recent Mini Symposium rated a success!

25-May-2010 12:00PM

On a snowy April weekend, 25 CCHCSP-sponsored trainees gathered at the Millcroft Inn in Caledon, Ontario for a Mini Symposium to learn the secrets to “Navigating for Success in Team Research.” Organized by Drs. Stephanie Atkinson and Norman Rosenblum, and guided by a strong multi-disciplinary advisory panel, trainees were challenged to develop approaches to establish team research from planning, to grant writing, to study implementation and publication. Keynote addresses were provided by Dr. Anne Junker (Director, MICYRN) on Accessing Pediatric Networks and Platforms for Research, and Dr. Deborah O’Connor (Director, Clinical Dietetics, Hospital for Sick Children) on Team Research: Academic and industry perspectives. A multi-disciplinary expert panel available as advisors to the trainees was comprised of Drs. Junker and O'Connor, Dr. Loren Grossman (VP Research & Development, Eli Lily Canada), Dr. Anne Marie Tassé (Centre for Genomics & Policy, McGill), as well as Drs. Atkinson and Rosenblum.

The weekend was broken down into three working sessions. In the first, trainees worked through mock scenarios looking at planning a study with a multi-disciplinary team, exploring the pros and cons of joining and/or leading a multi-centre research team. They developed plans to organize a multi-centre study based on an assigned topic, developed an approach to writing a team grant, and identified issues for involvement in private versus public research funding. In the second session trainees addressed issues of ethics, study management, and study subjects (recruitment, retainment, communication strategies). The third and final session was aimed at translating the results, publishing with a team, setting guidelines and addressing conflicts of interest. The multi-disciplinary advisory panel provided critical feedback to the trainees after each session.

Participants listed presentations by Drs. O’Connor and Junker as highlights, as well as the expertise from multiple disciplines including industry and basic science. Trainees also cited networking with other trainees and cross-discipline talk as very helpful. Overall, the event was rated as highly successful.
