Call for Applications

19-Oct-2011 12:10PM

Over the past decade, the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program has emerged as an effective program to train the next generation of child health clinician scientists in Canada.  With support from the Strategic Initiative in Health Research from CIHR and funding from its many partners across Canada, the CCHCSP has established itself as a vibrant, interdisciplinary training program for child health clinician scientists.

An important component of the CCHCSP’s strategic vision has been succession planning.  To this end, the CCHCSP Executive Committee has asked me to chair the Search Committee for a new Principal Investigator who will succeed Dr. Norman Rosenblum.  Dr. Rosenblum’s contributions to the CCHCSP have been outstanding.  He has been the creative force behind CCHCSP since its inception. Dr. Rosenblum has indicated that he believes the time is appropriate for a change in leadership.  It is his wish that CCHCSP find a replacement by mid-2012 so that the incoming Principal Investigator has the time to consolidate his/her plans for the future and to be ready to apply to CIHR for a renewal should the STIHR initiative be continued.

I have attached a call for applications (CallForAp) and a brief job description.  Please circulate it among colleagues who might be interested in this.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the coordinates listed below.

Sincerely,

William R. Avison, Ph.D.
Chair, PI Selection Committee

Because you asked!  We are pleased to provide the YouTube link to Dr. Rosenblum's video as shown at the CCHCSP National Symposium in Ottawa, October 14, 2011.

Dr. Norman Rosenblum, Principal Investigator of the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP) argues in debate format, 'tongue and cheek', that there is a positive outlook for clinician scientist careers in Canada.

Recent Mini Symposium rated a success!

25-May-2010 12:00PM

On a snowy April weekend, 25 CCHCSP-sponsored trainees gathered at the Millcroft Inn in Caledon, Ontario for a Mini Symposium to learn the secrets to “Navigating for Success in Team Research.” Organized by Drs. Stephanie Atkinson and Norman Rosenblum, and guided by a strong multi-disciplinary advisory panel, trainees were challenged to develop approaches to establish team research from planning, to grant writing, to study implementation and publication. Keynote addresses were provided by Dr. Anne Junker (Director, MICYRN) on Accessing Pediatric Networks and Platforms for Research, and Dr. Deborah O’Connor (Director, Clinical Dietetics, Hospital for Sick Children) on Team Research: Academic and industry perspectives. A multi-disciplinary expert panel available as advisors to the trainees was comprised of Drs. Junker and O'Connor, Dr. Loren Grossman (VP Research & Development, Eli Lily Canada), Dr. Anne Marie Tassé (Centre for Genomics & Policy, McGill), as well as Drs. Atkinson and Rosenblum.

The weekend was broken down into three working sessions. In the first, trainees worked through mock scenarios looking at planning a study with a multi-disciplinary team, exploring the pros and cons of joining and/or leading a multi-centre research team. They developed plans to organize a multi-centre study based on an assigned topic, developed an approach to writing a team grant, and identified issues for involvement in private versus public research funding. In the second session trainees addressed issues of ethics, study management, and study subjects (recruitment, retainment, communication strategies). The third and final session was aimed at translating the results, publishing with a team, setting guidelines and addressing conflicts of interest. The multi-disciplinary advisory panel provided critical feedback to the trainees after each session.

Participants listed presentations by Drs. O’Connor and Junker as highlights, as well as the expertise from multiple disciplines including industry and basic science. Trainees also cited networking with other trainees and cross-discipline talk as very helpful. Overall, the event was rated as highly successful.
