Project: Identifying behavioural markers for clinical subtypes of primary developmental speech sound disorder.
Dr. Shiller is a speech-language pathologist with research interests that cover a wide range of clinical and basic issues in the perception and production of speech. His Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from McGill University (under Dr. David Ostry) examined the contribution of various biomechanical factors on the neural control of speech movements, utilizing a range of techniques including precise kinematic measurement, computer simulations, and a newly developed procedure employing a robotic device to apply precisely controlled forces to the articulators during speech production. Following his Ph.D., Dr. Shiller received an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship to study audio- visual speech perception with Dr. Kevin Munhall at Queen’s University. With a strong developing interest in the study and treatment of pediatric speech disorders, Dr. Shiller returned to McGill in 2004 to pursue clinical training in speech-language pathology. After completing the program and a year of clinical practice focusing on speech disorders and stuttering in children, Dr.
Shiller joined the multidisciplinary Centre for Research in Language Mind and Brain at McGill to pursue a final stage of clinical research training under the supervision of Dr. Susan Rvachew (McGill), Dr. Vincent Gracco (McGill) and Dr. Michael Shevell (Montreal Children’s
Hospital). The goal of his present research is to develop improved methods for the diagnosis and treatment of speech production disorders in young children.
Dr. Shiller was recruited to a faculty position at the University of Montreal/Ste-Justine Hospital.
